Wedding Bears

These beautiful bears were inspired by the old saying, 'something old, something new, something borrowed something blue'. So much is invested in the choosing and purchasing of a wedding dress and many women will only ever wear it once.

The two bears we created for Christine were gifts for her daughter, who was soon to be married and her daughter's bridesmaid. The veil on the Bride bear is made from Christine’s original veil, seen here in the photograph circa 1965... something old something new.

Her daughter was absolutely thrilled with this very personnel and incredibly unique gift. One that can be passed down and treasured.

Maude's Bear

This story begins on the other side of the World in New Zealand in 1948. A lady went into a department store called Smith & Caughey in Queen St, Auckland and saw a bolt of fabric. She purchased some of the fabric, brought it home and made a dress.

Years later she had a daughter and passed the dress down to her. Her name was Maude. Maude kept the dress and when she had a daughter, it went into the dressing up box and there it stayed for a long long time.

Recently, 52 years later the old dress re-emerged... it was then that we realised how special it was. Somehow we had to create something using the dress fabric that could be kept and treasured. A very unique bear was made, bringing back wonderful childhood memories of my Mother which could so easily have been lost in the mists of time.

I hope and expect this unique and priceless piece of our family history will be passed down to many more generations.

Mia's Bear

This little bear was made from a child’s favourite piece of clothing. Here's what our customer said. "My daughter loved this shirt, she wore it everyday throughout many summer holidays until slowly but surely she grew out of it. I heard about Canterbury Bears bespoke service through a friend. I phoned them and spoke to a very friendly lady who suggested I send the shirt in and they would look at it for me.

This gorgeous little bear is the result. My daughter was thrilled and very surprised to see her much loved shirt again, she couldn't fit into it anymore but she could take it to bed! Thank you Canterbury Bears, for your brilliant and very personal service!"
